Lunch With Peter

Driving to work yesterday I listened to an interview with J. David Truby on KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh. J. David Truby is a former journalism professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and was a combat intelligence NCO for the U.S. Army in the 1960s. SInce then he has reported world wide on various military and special operations issues.

In light of the revelations by Eason Jordan about CNN's coverage in Iraq, he related a conversation he had over lunch with Peter Arnet over his reporting from Iraq during Desert Storm, most motably the famous (or infamous, if you wish) interview with Saddam Hussein. Truby asked Arnett, "Didn't you realize the propaganda value your reporting gave the Iraqis?" Arnett replied he was, but that the war was a big ratings boost, and there were orders from Ted Turner to do whatever it took to keep reporting from Iraq and keep ratings up as Turner was trying to build CNN into a major news network.
