Happy Tax Day!

America's annual tax ritual has reached it's climax once again. In honor of this special day, I decided to show everyone just how "rich" they really are. Every year, the IRS delivers a report to the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation detailing exactly how much was paid by filers at various income levels. These are not estimates, but rather actual numbers taken directly from filed tax returns. See where you fall:

Tax year 2000 (the last year for which data has been compiled):

If your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI - line 35 of your 1040) is higher than:

$313,369 - top 1% of all taxpayers - you paid 37.4% of all income taxes
$128,336 - top 5% of all taxpayers - you paid 56.5% of all income taxes
$92,114 - top 10% of all taxpayers - you paid 67.3% of all income taxes
$55,225 - top 25% of all taxpayers - you paid 84% of all income taxes
$27,682 - top 50% of all taxpayers - you paid 96.1% of all income taxes

And you never thought you were so rich...

"Today's report confirms that, despite White House scare tactics, Social Security remains sound for decades to come.."

-? Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (NV) upon hearing reports that the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds will go bankrupt even earlier than predicted.
