A big "Amen" to that...
President Bush's speech yesterday afternoon put the wishy-washies at the UN on notice.
"On November 8th, by demanding the immediate disarmament of Iraq, the United Nations Security Council spoke with clarity and authority. Now the Security Council will show whether its words have any meaning."
Can you say, "put up or shut up"?
Joe Conason over at Salon is today's reality-challenged liberal media pundit.
In his piece entitled "Show and tell," he claims Secretary Powell didn't prove it was necessary to go to war in Iraq in his presentation at the UN the other day.
But a couple sentences from his own rant show just how out of touch he really is:
"Colin Powell showed that Saddam Hussein is resisting disarming. But he didn't prove that he's an immediate threat."
UN Resolution 1441 has nothing whatsoever to do with Saddam being an "immediate threat." Go to the UN Documentation Centre and look up Security Council Resolution 1441. It is time to act because Saddam is resisting disarming.
"[I]f this information is accurate, was it provided to the UNMOVIC inspectors in full compliance with the responsibilities placed on all member states by that resolution?"
Er...um...Joe, why do you think Secretary Powell was there? Of course, this has zero to do with Iraq's responsibility to get rid of prohibited weapons and cooperate with inspectors.
OK, kiddies, it's time for:
Today's Smoking Gun
From UN Security Council Resolution 1441:
"UNMOVIC and the IAEA shall have the free and unrestricted use and landing
of fixed- and rotary-winged aircraft, including manned and unmanned
From Hans Blix's Report to the UN in January:
"While we now have the technical capability to send a U-2 plane placed at our disposal for aerial imagery and for surveillance during inspections and have informed Iraq that we planned to do so, Iraq has refused to guarantee its safety, unless a number of conditions are fulfilled. As these conditions went beyond what is stipulated in resolution 1441 (2002) and what was practiced by UNSCOM and Iraq in the past, we note that Iraq is not so far complying with our request."
